Following the 2016 Regular Election, in January 2017 Nisga’a Elections Officer embarked on a project to update the legislation that guides how an election event is administered.
Amendments included:
- Replacing the current nomination meeting process with a paper nomination process.
- Removing the requirement for Council of Elders members to resign before being able to stand for elected office
- Removing Prince George as an additional voting area
- Removing all candidate photograph requirements in nomination and ballot materials
- Removing certain personal information from the lists of voters made available for public inspection
- Adding safeguards to the public inspection of the lists of voters
The amendment process was completed in June 2020 and the new processes were implemented in the 2020 Regular Election of Nisga’a Government.
Further legislative amendments are being proposed following the 2020 regular election and by-elections that have taken place.
